WPSL suspends 2012 season

updated 6:30 p.m. ET Jan. 30, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO - Women's Professional Soccer won't play the 2012 season amid a legal dispute with an ousted owner.

The league's Board of Governors voted Monday to suspend the season with hopes of resuming in 2013, the WPS announced.

In October, it terminated its South Florida franchise after clashing with owner Dan Borislow all season. A Florida judge ruled earlier this month that the league failed to follow its own dispute procedures when it terminated the franchise, and another court hearing is set for Wednesday.

WPS CEO Jennifer O'Sullivan said owners chose to cancel the season over possibly working with Borislow in the league again.

"We have diverted so many resources into litigation," she said. "This is something that needs to be resolved before we can move forward with play."

Borislow purchased the former Washington Freedom before last season and moved the club to South Florida, renaming it for a telephone call device he invented. The magicJack franchise was repeatedly disciplined during the season for not meeting league standards. In August, after Borislow filed suit against the WPS, the league released a statement accusing him of violations ranging from "unprofessional and disparaging treatment of his players to failure to pay his bills."

The league has played three seasons. It needed a waiver from the U.S. Soccer Federation to be sanctioned as a first-division league in 2012 with only five teams, below the required eight. In the deal with the governing body in December, WPS agreed to increase the number of teams to a minimum of six for 2013 and at least eight for 2014.

A longtime thoroughbred owner, Borislow was an outspoken figure in horse racing but sold most of his stable because of a dispute with the IRS.

O'Sullivan was not yet CEO when he was approved as an owner, but she acknowledged the vetting process might have been hurried.

"I do think the league at the time was in a situation where they were in a bit of a rush," she said.

With the Olympics this summer, the league's absence could give national team players more time to train together even if it means fewer games for them to play. The attention paid to the Olympics would have been valuable marketing for the WPS during the 2012 season.

The league's predecessor, the Women's United Soccer Association, folded after three years.

Mars probe 'falls over Pacific'

  • 8 Nov (GMT): The probe launched successfully on its Zenit rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome
  • It was dropped off 11 minutes later in an elliptical orbit some 345km (apogee) above the Earth
  • Two firings from the probe's hydrazine-fuelled cruise stage were planned over South America
  • The first, lasting 11.5 minutes, should have raised the orbit of Phobos-Grunt to 4,000km
  • A second burn, four hours into the mission, was to have sent the probe on a path to Mars
  • But Russian engineers later confirmed that neither burn took place
  • Controllers made only limited radio contact with the probe; mission recovery was not possible
  • Re-entry was predicted for mid-January; 20-30 fragments were expected to survive the descent

Orbital tracking reports suggest Russia's failed Mars probe, Phobos-Grunt, fell back to Earth on Sunday, to be destroyed over the Pacific.

Russian, US and European sources announced the demise of the craft within minutes of each other.

It brings to an end the sorry story of this mission, which promised to return rocky samples from Mars' biggest moon.

Instead, after its launch in November, Phobos-Grunt could not get more than 345km from Earth before stalling.

Once it became clear that controllers could not establish contact with the probe and diagnose its faults, a fiery dive back to Earth was inevitable.

The spacecraft's last orbit took it over Japan, and the Solomon Islands, and to the east of Australia and New Zealand. Conflicting reports then had the final re-entry point across a great swathe of the Southern Ocean. Certainly, it seems Phobos-Grunt was down and destroyed before it could have passed over Chile.

The Russian space agency (Roscosmos) had estimated that no more than 200kg of the original 13-tonne launch mass of Phobos-Grunt would survive the destructive forces of a dive to Earth.

"According to information from mission control of the space forces, the fragments of Phobos-Grunt should have fallen into the Pacific Ocean at 1745 GMT," space forces spokesman Alexei Zolotukhin told the Interfax news agency.

This is the third high-profile spacecraft re-entry in four months, following the return in September of the American UARS satellite and the German Rosat telescope in October. Both fell over the ocean.

With so much of the Earth's surface covered by water, there was every chance Phobos-Grunt would do the same.

The mission was built to land on Phobos, to scoop up rock and bring it back to Earth for study in Earth laboratories.

Such a venture would have yielded fascinating new insights into the origin of the 27km-wide object and the planet it circles.

The mission was notable also because China's first Mars satellite, Yinghuo-1, was launched piggy-back on the main Russian spacecraft. It will have been destroyed along with Phobos-Grunt during the fall back to Earth.

The Russians have had a torrid run of space failures recently, leading the head of the country's space agency to wonder even if saboteurs were at work.

Western countries, which use Russian rockets to launch their satellites, are just worried though that some systematic failures have started to appear in what has traditionally been a highly regarded space industry.

With their own opportunity to go to Mars now lost, the Russians may decide to put their future interplanetary efforts into joint ventures with the Americans and the Europeans. The Russians have an offer from the US and Europe to join the ExoMars missions to the Red Planet in 2016 and 2018.

  • Phobos-Grunt sat on the cruise stage that was supposed to take it to Mars. Attached also was the Yinghuo-1 satellite, China's first Red Planet mission
  • Most of this 2.5 tonnes of hardware would have burnt up in the atmosphere. The more-than-10-tonnes of fuel was expected to explode on re-entry
  • Phobos-Grunt's orbit around the Earth meant that it could only enter the atmosphere between the latitudes of 51.4 degrees North and South
  • Roughly one old satellite or rocket body falls to Earth every week, but at 13 tonnes Phobos-Grunt was one of the biggest, uncontrolled falls in years

China Unicom Announces Free iPhone 4S With Multi-Year Contract

Following Apple officially announcing that its iPhone 4S will become available in China ? (and 21 further countries) ? starting January 13, Chinese telecoms provider China Unicom has announced that upon the smartphone?s launch across the region it will be offering its customers the chance to get their hands on the iPhone, (for FREE), providing those customers are prepared to sign a new, multi-year wireless contract.

The offer covers both Apple?s 32GB and 16GB iPhone 4S models, with customers looking to get their hands on the 32GB model first required a three-year contract at 286 yuan (~$45) per month. Those in China looking to get their hands on Apple?s 16GB iPhone 4S will be required to sign a new, two-year wireless contract at 386 yuan per month.

While ditching the handset pricing on the iPhone 4S entirely ? from a business perspective ? may seem a little risky, industry analysts now speculate that the move could end up attracting customers to the network who are more willing to pay for Unicom?s expensive data plans.

Did we mention iPhone 4S users use twice as much data as iPhone 4 users? ? Yeah.

Steve Jobs Doll Legal In Most States, Not Indiana | paidContent

Apple?s lawyers have a fearsome reputation for defending the company?s intellectual property. But it sure looks like they?re bluffing in the controversy over a new Steve Jobs doll.

A UK newspaper caused a stir yesterday when it reported that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) had threatened legal action against a Chinese company that plans to sell an eerie replica of its late founder starting next month. The Daily Telegraph said Apple claims to own rights to Jobs? likeness.

SEE ALSO: Why The Tech Industry Knows We'll Never See Another Steve Jobs

Dead or not, Steve Jobs is still huge news and the story went viral. Media outlets, noting that Apple had stopped the release of another Jobs doll in 2010, reported the story as a warning to other companies who would dare appropriate the property of mighty Apple.

But there is a huge problem here?Apple?s legal claim is largely bogus. While people can indeed own rights to their likeness, those rights usually apply only to living people. Unlike other forms of intellectual property like patents or copyrights, image rights do not survive beyond the grave in most places.

Under American law, so-called ?personality rights? exist only at the state level?there is no federal law. And only about a dozen states recognize image rights after death. Oddly, it is Indiana that has the strongest protection, restricting commercial use of a person?s image for 100 years after their passing.

But in New York and most other places, there is no protection at all. This was confirmed five years when a court in the state found that no one had the exclusive right to market Marilyn Monroe. Efforts to change the law have so far failed.

What this means is that Apple?s warning about the doll is an empty threat in most places. It may not even be able to stop others from using the name Steve Jobs as, surprisingly, the term does not appear on the company?s long list of registered trademarks. A company spokesperson did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Apple?s lack of control over the doll is in many ways a welcome reality check. Remember that Steve Jobs was not just a design genius but also a control freak who used layer after layer of intellectual property to create legal force fields around his products. While this boosted Apple, it also shut out many other innovators and helped give rise to the destructive litigation that now mars so much of the technology sector.

The ghost of Jobs and Apple fans may take comfort that they can keep the doll out of at least some states, including his home of California (see full list below). And likewise some countries, including Germany and Argentina, have national laws that protect image rights after death. In other places, though, they must simply hope that good taste will keep people from buying a lifelike Steve Jobs doll with removable hands (a famous quote suggests this is unlikely.)

The Steve Jobs doll will be off-limits in the following states, based on a list in a recent scholarly article: Indiana, Illinois, Texas, Connecticut, Georgia, Florida, California, Ohio, Virginia, Washington, New Jersey, Nevada, Nebraska, Kentucky, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

Sony Ericsson LT26i 'Nozomi' gets leaked again ahead of inevitable CES unveiling

Android Central

Ready for yet another Sony Ericsson "Nozomi" leak? Following on from the slew of images that worked their way onto the web in November and December, some new photos of the upcoming SE device have appeared on ITProPortal today, seemingly confirming much of what we already knew from earlier leaks.

To recap, inside the LT26i (or Nozomi, if you prefer codenames), you've apparently got a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, the same sort that powers the HTC Sensation XE, along with 1GB of RAM. Software-wise, there's Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread, skinned with a new version of SE's Xperia UI. On the outside, there's said to be a 720p Bravia Engine display, tucked inside a chassis of similar size to the Arc S, albeit a little chunkier around the back. The rear camera is said to be an impressive 12MP Sony Exmor R sensor, a step up from the 8MP camera of the Arc and Arc S. Interestingly, ITProPortal refers to the device as the Xperia HD, rather than the Xperia Arc HD, which we've heard from other sources.

Only a few more days now, folks, and we'll be able to get our hands on this and other CES-bound devices on the show floor in Las Vegas. Maybe then we'll find out what's going on with that weird transparent cut-out section along the bottom of the phone.

Ricky Martin at work on 'Glee,' shoots down wedding rumors

It looks like Ricky Martin is filling the role of the "hottest Spanish teacher ever in the history of Ohio" on "Glee" just fine.

News that the 40-year-old singer was in talks for the guest role arrived last November, and on Thursday, Martin tweeted a photo of himself clad in all-black on his first day of work.

But while Martin is putting in work on the "Glee" set, rumors have been bouncing about that he's getting ready to tie the knot with boyfriend Carlos Gonzalez Abella on January 28.

With all the engagement news happening as of late, it wouldn't be a surprise...except, Martin tells Latina magazine there's no truth to the gossip.

"We are not talking about it, we're not thinking about it," Martin says. But if they ever do decide to wed, "I'm so happy that in Europe we have the option," he went on. "It's amazing to think that we can say, 'I feel like it. I'm ready. Let's go.'"

It sounds like Martin will be ready to expand his family before he's ready to walk down the aisle though. Already dad to twin 3-year-old sons, he tells Latina that the boys should have a sister eventually.

"I think that I'll do it later on this year, so that [the kids] aren't too far apart in ages," he says. "A little girl!...But we're going to talk about that later on. It would be irresponsible to do it now."

Big Three report booming sales for 2011 as Americans unload old cars

Chrysler's sales jump 26 percent over 2010, as smaller and more fuel friendly models give the Big Three US automakers a boost. Also driving sales, pent-up demand from owners of aging cars.

Smaller and more fuel-friendly vehicles are credited with boosting the year-end sales of US automakers. In data released Wednesday, each of Detroit?s Big Three ? General Motors, Ford Motor Co., and Chrysler Group ? enjoyed double-digit sales growth for 2011.

The greatest success story is Chrysler, which reported the highest rate of growth among the domestic competition. Unit sales for cars and trucks jumped 26 percent over 2010, resulting in 1.4 million vehicles sold in the US alone.

Chrysler, the No. 3 US manufacturer, reported the gains just two years after it filed for bankruptcy.

Michelle Krebs, a senior analyst with Edmunds.com, says the turnaround can be traced to the company?s famous Super Bowl ad last year, which became a viral hit online and ended up winning the 2011 Emmy Award for best commercial (see blow).

The ad, for the Chrysler 200, was set to an Eminem song and featured the rapper cruising the gritty back streets and downtown boulevards of Detroit. Its defiant tone and city pride ?? the tagline ?imported from Detroit? entered the lexicon soon after ? created an emotional tone that many said captured the narrative of the US auto industry itself.

?That was a milestone in terms of turnaround [for Chrysler]. That convinced people they were back. Sales went through the roof as a result,? says Ms. Krebs.

Sales of the Chrysler 200 alone jumped 661 percent last year compared with 2010.

GM sold 2.5 vehicles in the US last year, a 17.6 percent increase. Ford came in second with 2 million in unit sales, an 11 percent increase.

Total industry light vehicles sales, including imports, are expected to reach 12.8 million for the year, an 11.3 percent increase from 11.5 million sold last year.

Polk, an automotive research firm in Southfield, Mich., forecasts that US sales will increase 7.3 percent to 13.7 million in 2012. Industry sales peaked in 2000, when total US sales reached 17.4 million. Polk reports that luxury will represent the fastest-growing segment this year as prices lower and manufacturers offer more options in that market, from smaller cars to SUVs.

Small car segments drove sales for all three manufacturers, a trend that started in 2008 when gas prices first sailed over the $4 per gallon mark and the Obama administration issued fuel economy standards starting in model year 2017. By 2025, fuel efficiency standards for new cars and light trucks will reach 54.5 mpg.

Ford reports small-car sales increased 25 percent in 2011, the greatest rate increase in that segment for any US automaker. Fiesta sales had the greatest gain, jumping 195 percent from 2010, with 68,574 sold.

?The industry has never seen a time when all three [automakers] had very good small cars. They?re finally back in the small car market,? says Krebs.

Helping drive up new car sales is pent-up demand. According to data from Polk, the average age of a vehicle in 2010 was 11 years, up from 8.4 years in 1995. Because people held onto cars longer these past few years, pent-up demand is naturally cycling into new cars sale of late.

?The used car market supply is very low and prices are very high and yet people are desperate to buy because their vehicles are so old,? Krebs says.

Import automakers in Asia were hit hard by the 2010 tsunami and earthquake in Japan, which slowed automobile production and subsequent sales.

Toyota sales were down 7 percent in 2011 compared to the previous year. The company sold 1.6 million vehicles last year. Honda did not release year-end sales data by press time. However year-to-year sales in November showed a 6 percent decrease, according to Edmunds.

Tanker collision triggers oil spill off Singapore

(AP)? SINGAPORE ? Singapore's port authority says two tankers collided off the city-state's coast, trigging a small fuel oil spill.

The Maritime and Port Authority said in a statement Thursday that five metric tons of marine fuel oil spilled into the Singapore Strait from the Singapore-registered tanker Kota Tenaga after it crashed with the Malta-registered SEEB late Wednesday.

The MPA said authorities have contained the spill and chemical dispersants were used to break up patches of oil.

The MPA said it is investigating the cause of the collision, which happened about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) south of the main island of Singapore.

The MPA said no injures were reported.

10 Certified Fresh Crime Thrillers

Most crime thrillers climax with the bad guy getting caught. Since Zodiac is based upon a real unsolved crime (correction: series of crimes), it's no spoiler to say that justice doesn't completely prevail in the end. In fact, it's that lack of a tidy conclusion that makes Zodiac even more unsettling; it's a serial killer movie about a real serial killer who may still be on the loose. David Fincher's long-but-briskly-paced thriller is a tale of obsession, as political cartoonist-turned-amateur sleuth Robert Graysmith's (Jake Gyllenhaal) life is consumed by the search for the Zodiac Killer, who murdered at least seven people in the Bay Area in the late 1960s and early 1970s. With remarkable period details, an exceptional cast (which includes Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey, Jr., Brian Cox, and Chlo? Sevigny), and a nail-biting sense of dread throughout, Zodiac is one cold case that emits a white-hot intensity.

Romney looks to fend off Santorum, Paul (AP)

DAVENPORT, Iowa ? The Iowa race remarkably fluid, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney faces a suddenly surging Rick Santorum, an unpredictable Ron Paul factor and the challenge of winning over undecided conservatives in a state that spurned him four years ago.

It's the last full day of campaigning before the caucuses that kick off state-by-state voting in the fight to pick a Republican to challenge President Barack Obama next fall.

The trio clustered at the top, as well as the trailing Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, were fanning out across the Midwestern state to make closing arguments to the chunk of likely Iowa Republican caucus-goers who say they haven't decided who to support and still could change their minds.

"I feel very confident. We've got a great ground game," Perry said on NBC as the day began, highlighting the 41 percent of likely voters who say in a recent poll that they could be persuaded to vote for someone else.

It's been a volatile and costly race with at least $12.5 million in advertising ? much of it negative ? flooding the Iowa airwaves in the run-up to the caucuses as candidates and outside groups aligned with them, called super PACs, worked to influence the outcome of what has been a wide open and unpredictable campaign.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, has roughly the same amount of backing in polls as he did in 2008 when he lost the race with 25 percent of the Iowa vote amid skepticism over his Mormon faith and his reversals on some social issues. This year, he has been counting on the GOP conservative base splintering in a multi-candidate field to allow him to win with roughly the same percentage of the vote.

But now, Santorum is challenging him for the lead, and the anti-abortion crusader is looking to unify socially conservative voters behind his candidacy. And that's putting pressure on Romney, who is focusing on turning out his base of support from his last campaign and planned a series of Monday rallies in cities across the eastern part of the state, where he's won before. His day begins here at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds and continues in Dubuque, Cedar Rapids and Des Moines.

In appearances, Romney has consistently pressed his central argument: that only he had the ability to wage a strong enough campaign to beat Obama. Santorum, popular among cultural and religious conservatives, and Paul, a libertarian-leaning candidate, worked to persuade Iowans that they would be able to attract a broad enough coalition of voters in the general election to beat Obama.

On Sunday, Romney engaged with Santorum for the first time since his rival's rise, offering mild criticism. Santorum "has spent his career in the government in Washington," Romney said during a campaign stop in Atlantic.

"I'll let people make their own assessment of our respective records," Romney said. "But I'm a conservative."

Santorum, in turn, worked to counter Romney's central electability argument.

"I'm the candidate that actually was able to win in states, as a conservative, in getting Democrats and independents to vote for us," Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator who is surging in the race and is a favorite among cultural conservatives, said in an interview on CNN. "Mitt Romney has no track history of doing that."

Paul, too, worked to counter the suggestion that he's a fringe candidate, calling himself "electable" in a Sunday interview with ABC from his home state. He's looking to stem a recent slide as he's been attacked as out of the mainstream on foreign policy.

The issue of what type of candidate to choose cuts to the heart of why the Iowa race is so volatile; an NBC/Marist poll last week showed nearly even percentages of Iowa caucus-goers want a candidate who shares their values as want a candidate who can beat Obama.

And a Des Moines Register poll released Saturday showed half of likely Iowa caucus-goers viewed Romney as the Republican most likely to win the general election. On that question, he was far ahead of Santorum and of Paul, who was viewed as the least likely to win. But Santorum beat Romney best when asked who relates best to Iowans.

Romney's support was steady in the poll with 24 percent, while Paul was sliding and Santorum rising in a race that will come down to which way on-the-fence Republicans here break. All the others trailed.

5 beautiful reasons to love Venice

Alastair Hendy

The Grand Canal in Venice.

By Cathy Newman and Rocky Cassale, Budget Travel

Venice teeters on the edge of clich? with its lacework of canals, its domes and gilded spires, its kiosks with straw gondolier hats and refrigerator magnets in the shape of the Piazza San Marco. Postcard fodder, and yet ...

Venice is beautiful ? improbably so, a centaur-like hybrid, neither land nor water but somewhere in between as it lifts from the green of the Adriatic Sea. The city is drenched in so-exquisite-it-hurts beauty: the tracery of arches in the Doge's Palace, the pinpoint of lights from boats in the lagoon at night. The grime of centuries eats at its stones, but the decay is luscious. The seduction proceeds.

It has been so for centuries. To be a tourist in Venice is to join a procession reaching back to the 14th century, when pilgrims stopped en route to the Holy Land. To capitalize on its geography as the departure point for voyages to the East, the canny Venetians created festivals to coincide with the influx, a hint of the commercialism to come.

That wallet squeeze irritates, but it's one you inevitably force yourself to stomach, particularly when catching sight of the Venice silhouette for the first time from the mainland shore of the lagoon. To get at the essence of Venice, we asked the experts ? a group of professional photographers ? what they see when they look at the city. From their most treasured scenes to their favorite hotels, they've given us five beautiful reasons to love this city even more than we already do.

Slideshow: See the five scenes these photographers love, and more

"It's the kind of place that's spectacular in every shade of light."
--Photographer Olimpio Fantuz

"I've been coming to Venice from nearby Treviso since I was a child. It's one of the most unique cities in the world, not only for its breathtaking architecture and frailty, but also for its endless array of angles. One of my preferred perspectives is the canal behind the Basilica di San Marco. From the lagoon side on the Ponte della Paglia, you can see this, but it's nearly impossible to get an unobstructed view because of the wave of tourists on the Ponte della Paglia. Farther down the canal, inside the tangle of buildings, you get this stunning look at all four bridges lined up and anchored at the end by the Bridge of Sighs. This is the kind of place that's spectacular in every season and in every shade of light." See the shot.

My favorite hotel: Ca'Della Torre, a two-bedroom apartment with a stocked kitchenette (a two-minute walk from the bridge in this photo's foreground). viewsonvenice.com, sleeps four, $274 per night for seven nights.

"The beauty of Venice is in the winter, in its time of tranquility."
--Photographer Massimo Borchi

"For all the obvious reasons, I understand why Venice receives the deluge of tourists it does in summer. I prefer the city in winter, when this photo was taken inside Caff? Florian, in Piazza San Marco. Then, the cafe is melancholy like the lagoon. Neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city are nearly silent. For me, this photo captures that moment. You see empty tables and locals enjoying their gilded cafe. I believe the beauty of Venice is found in its time of tranquility." See the shot.

Tip: Should you sit when there's a band playing at a cafe like Florian, you'll be charged an additional $8.75. caffeflorian.com, coffee and table service $8.75.

My favorite hotel: The 15-room La Residenza, housed in a 15th-century Gothic-Byzantine palazzo. venicelaresidenza.com, from $107.

"I find the water and the flooding quite beautiful."
--Photographer Johanna Huber

"For Venetians, high waters are an ugly and perilous occurrence. I snapped this photo just behind Palazzo Ducale [Doge's Palace] on a rainy October day, and it strikes me because the Venetians are just plodding through the torrents rising around them. They persevere, as they have for nearly 1,000 years. I settled in the nearby Veneto region nearly 50 years ago, and I find the water and flooding quite beautiful. The natural process of high tides has long defined Venetians and their city. It encourages sociability and is what's prevented cars from taking over. Now that the Moses dam is being built under the lagoon to limit flooding in Venice, you probably won't see this magical event as often." See the shot.

My favorite hotel: The five-room Palazzo Soderini, whose discreet, walled garden provides the rare Venetian escape from the tides. palazzosoderini.it, from $101.

"For me, Venice's beauty is found in its authenticity."
--Photographer Sam Abell

"For me, Venice's beauty is found in its authenticity. Over the past 30 years, I have traveled there on assignment a couple times for National Geographic, spending weeks scouring the edges of the city, photographing gondola repair shops, stone carvers chiseling tombstones, fishermen hauling in heaps of netting. In 1994, I took this photo of a fisherman near the Hotel Cipriani. The mood was beautiful that evening ? the atmosphere with those strong blue colors all around. This man was just finishing up his day, doing tasks that had been done in the lagoon for centuries before him." See the shot.

My favorite hotel: The three-room B&B Rialto, a one-minute walk to Venice's storied Rialto fish market. bbrialto.com, from $144.

"I love how the Venetian lifestyle hasn't changed in decades."
--Photographer Graciela Cattarossi

"There is something about Venice that goes against modern comforts. I find it a very difficult place. You have to take a boat or walk to get anywhere, and even then there are infinite detours. I wonder if the true Venetians are ever at ease. I took this photo in 2009 near the Rialto fish market. It was midday when I turned the corner to find this group of men chatting together over a late lunch. I've been coming to Venice since I was 7, and even in these modern times with massive tourism, the Venetian lifestyle is still here; it hasn't completely disappeared." See the shot.

My favorite hotel: The eight-room C? Arco Antico, which exudes a timeless charm, with its Murano chandeliers and lead-latticed windows. arcoanticovenice.com, from $87.

Romney disappointed in Obama promises, Kardashian wedding

No one has ever accused Mitt Romney for being too loosey goosey on the campaign trail. But this was a funny, if bizarre line from the candidate (via New York Times):

?You know, I?ve been looking at some video clips on YouTube, of President Obama, then candidate Obama, going through Iowa making promises,? Mr. Romney said. ?The gap between his promises and his performance is the largest I?ve seen since, well, the Kardashian wedding and the promise of ?till death do us part.? ?

D-Link Powerline AV 500 4-Port gigabit Switch (DHP-540)

The D-Link Powerline AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch (DHP-540) makes it easy to bring multiple Internet-ready devices online without having to run CAT-5 cable throughout your house. This intelligent switch uses your home's electrical wiring to send and receive data over your home network, but at $199.99 (list) it is significantly more expensive than competing products that offer the same performance and give you more features.?

Features and Specs
Unlike the Netgear Universal Internet Adapter for Home Entertainment-3D (XAVB5004) kit, which includes a 4-port switch and a powerline adapter, the DHP-540 is a stand-alone 4-port powerline switch. It comes with one Ethernet cable, a power cord, and a CD with installation and user manuals, plus a utility that helps you mange the switch. If you don't already have a powerline network installed, you'll have to shell out even more money for a Powerline AV 500 adapter to connect to your router (the D-Link DHP-500AV adapter goes for $99.99 list).

With dimensions of 1.6 by 5.0 by 3.9 inches (HWD) the shiny black DHP-540 is bulkier than the Netgear XAV5004, but just slightly. It has a small D-Link logo on the front panel along with six LED status indicators. The Power LED glows solid green when the switch is powered up and blinks during setup and when cycling through the security process. The Powerline LED is solid green when the switch is connected to a network and blinks when transmitting data. A green light indicates a link rate greater than 80 Mbps, amber is between 50-80Mbps, and red means the link rate is below 50Mbps. Off to the right are four numbered LAN LEDs (one for each port) that glow green when the port is connected and blink when it is receiving or sending data.

A button on top of the switch generates a random 128-bit AES encryption key that can be used for all powerline devices installed on your network. Simply press the button for two seconds and when it stops blinking, it is secure. Pressing the security button on other powerline adapters (within two minutes of the first one) assigns the same encryption key to each device.

At the rear of the switch are four numbered Ethernet ports, with number 1 getting the highest QoS (Quality of Service) priority, then number 2, and so on. When connecting devices to the switch, use port number 1 for high bandwidth applications such as streaming video or playing graphics intensive online action games. You can't manually assign QoS priorities with the DHP540 as you can with the Netgear XAV5004, however. Also on the rear are a power switch and a two-pronged power cord jack, and there's a recessed factory reset button on the bottom of the switch.

The DHJP540's utility is very straight-forward and easy to use; the Home page menu displays all powerline available devices on the network, their link rate, and quality (HD video ready or data transmission ready, depending on the link rate). A Setup Wizard icon takes you through the basic installation steps and shows you how to enable the security feature. The Advanced icon takes you to a page with three tabs; the Device tab opens a page that displays the device name, MAC Address, and firmware version and has a button that lets you update the firmware. In the Network tab you can view each device on the network, its location (local or remote), link rate, MAC address, and password. Each powerline device has a unique password on its label that is needed to change the encryption key on remote devices. The Diagnostics tab shows detailed information, including firmware version and date and the name and OS version of any connected PCs. The Home page also contains a troubleshooting guide and a customer support link that takes you to D-Link's website.

Washington Redskins: 'Skins Should Make a Move for Stevie Johnson

On Thursday,?NFL.com reported that Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson is confident of remaining with the AFC East outfit for 2012.

But the Washington Redskins should give the pending free agent something else to think about. The 25-year-old pass-catcher has proved himself to be one of the most dynamic young wideouts in the game.

Johnson has broken the 2,000-yard mark in receiving in the past two seasons combined and is clearly a player on the rise. He has the kind of playmaking skills that would make him the focal point of the Redskins pass offense.

The 6'2", 210-pounder possesses the kind of physical intangibles Mike Shanahan likes in a receiver. He is also an intelligent route runner with a knack for getting open.

Drops have blighted Johnson's game at times. These struggles have hurt the Bills at critical moments in more than one game during the last two seasons.

He has also courted controversy thanks to his elaborate and flamboyant end zone celebrations. But at 25, Johnson is young enough to eradicate such bad habits from his game.

Johnson's costly drops and?the backlash to some of his on the field antics?could make the Bills shy away from offering him premium terms. This would open the door for Bruce Allen to tempt Johnson to D.C.

The Redskins desperately need a legitimate big-play weapon at wide receiver. Given the number of pass plays Kyle Shanahan likes to call, his offense must have a clear, No. 1 flanker to target.

Johnson has the skill set to be that player. He is a younger alternative to the likes of Vincent Jackson and would benefit from the influence of veterans Santana Moss and Jabar Gaffney.

If the Redskins do opt to select a quarterback with their first pick in the draft, giving him a target like Johnson to throw to, would only make the rookie's job easier.

Pairing a more accurate passer with a weapon as prolific as Johnson, could see the Redskins offense light up some scoreboards in 2012.

Fabolous Buries The Competition On New Mixtape

Fab rounds out his There Is No Competition mixtape series with third installment, in Mixtape Daily.

Mixtape: There Is No Competition III: Death Comes in 3's
Real Spit: Funeral Fab takes no days off — not even Christmas. On Sunday while many were celebrating the holidays with family, Fabolous decided to gift-wrap his latest mixtape and release it online as a free download. There Is No Competition III: Death Comes in 3's is the third installment of the popular series that Fab and DJ Drama started in 2008.

"The theme of There Is No Competition III, it has the subtitle Death Comes in 3's, which plays along in the trilogy of this tape," Fab told Mixtape Daily.

The death-themed tape doesn't disappoint. On "Black City," Fabolous dons appropriate mourning attire and rides Tyga's "Rack City" beat to take shots at his rap competitors. The killing spree continues on the Lloyd Banks-assisted "Get Down or Lay Down" when F-A-B-O spits, "Money over bitches, dirt on top of bitch, n---as/ Put you in ya place, it happens to be a ditch, n---a." The Street Fam general calls upon more rap comrades on "B.E.T," which features Styles P and Jadakiss, and then again on "Unf---witable" with Red Café.

Things begin to get personal on "Death in the Family." Over an eerie-sounding track, Loso partners up with his brother Paul Cain and together they bid farewell to an unnamed former friend. "I be sayin' to myself as I put on the gloves, it hurts when you gotta kill a n---a you love," Fab raps on the hook.

It isn't all slow singing and flower bringing though. Fab and Meek Mill trade witty bars on "You Don't Know 'Bout It," and on "Spend It," Loso hooks up with Trey Songz as they deliver their take on 2 Chainz's underground hit of the same name.

With Fab's sixth studio album, Loso's Way 2, due out next year, TINC III is the perfect way to end a notable year for the Brooklyn MC, who made a killing in the streets.

Joints to Check For
» "Death Comes in 3's" - "It's like the wake; it's like the thing before the funeral. It's just me, a little bit of my sh-- talking, my letting know they're in for a ride with this mixtape."

» "You Don't Know 'Bout It" - "It started out just being a beat that I liked. I heard it, it was a Travis Porter song, actually. I just jumped on it and hit Meek up."
