'Center City Starr Award' presented for enhancing Arizonans' quality of life

PHOENIX, Ariz. March 30, 2012 The Phoenix Community Alliance (PCA) will honor Dr. Jeffrey Trent, President of the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), with its most prestigious award.

Dr. Trent, Ph.D., F.A.C.M.G., will receive PCA's Center City Starr Award for his work in improving the lives of countless Arizonans through TGen's biomedical advances in studying diseases such as Alzheimer's, diabetes and many types of cancer.

"The Phoenix Community Alliance is proud to have this opportunity to honor Dr. Jeffery Trent," said PCA Chairman Mo Stein. "The transformative nature and significance of the work and accomplishments through Dr. Trent continue to touch and improve the lives of hundreds of patients and, in doing so, advance the quality of life here in the heart of our city and state, and, indeed, well beyond our borders.

"It is breathtaking to envision the future in light of such great progress," said Stein, Principal of HKS Inc., who in February took the reins of the non-profit PCA, the private sector's prime mover behind development of downtown and central Phoenix.

The Center City Starr Award is named for the late Phoenix City Councilman and PCA President Barry Starr. It is presented annually to individuals from the public and private sectors that have made outstanding contributions to Phoenix's Central City.

A letter from Stein informed Dr. Trent that he was selected by past Center City Starr Award recipients for his "quintessential leadership role" at TGen, a non-profit biomedical research facility established in 2002 as an essential element of the downtown Phoenix Biomedical Campus. "They wish to recognize your outstanding work that has enhanced the quality of life for the people of our community."

The Center City Starr Award honors individuals who:

• Consistently lead and challenge the community to continued quality growth and development.
• Unfailingly support the commitment and efforts of business, government, educational, cultural, civic and religious organizations, neighborhood groups, property owners and individuals to revitalize Phoenix's Central City and surrounding neighborhoods.
• Tirelessly devote their time, talent and resources to the betterment of Phoenix's Central City.

Dr. Trent said he would be extremely honored to receive the Center City Starr Award, especially since the selection is made by so many of Arizona's most distinguished citizens who have received the award in past years.

"It is with deep gratitude that I will accept this award on behalf of everyone at TGen. It is a supreme compliment to all those at TGen, and to all of our collaborators, who work tirelessly to help improve the lives of patients with debilitating diseases and conditions," Dr. Trent said. "We are proud to have the opportunity to conduct most of this work at our TGen headquarters, right in the heart of the downtown Phoenix Biomedical Campus."

The award will be presented to Dr. Trent at a special reception from 4-6 p.m. April 4 at Steele Indian School Park, Third Street and Indian School Road. The other recipient that day will be Dr. Eugene Giovannini, Ed.D., President of GateWay Community College.

Hard rock festival Sonisphere has become the first major UK music festival to be cancelled in 2012, amid what the organisers called a ?very challenging year?.

The festival was due to run from July 6-8 at Knebworth Park in southern England, with headline acts including Queen, Kiss, Marilyn Manson, and Faith No More.

Rock band Queen was to perform with ?American Idol? singer Adam Lambert.

Roger Taylor and Brian May of Queen expressed their disappointment in a statement: ?We were very much looking forward to performing with Adam Lambert and particularly as the venue was Knebworth, our last stand with Freddie. We apologise for the disappointment to all those who were looking forward to seeing us. We are working to see if we can redress the situation at some other venue.?

It is unclear the reasons the festival has been cancelled, but organisers said that they had ?spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar?.

?Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere?s audience would rightly expect,? they said in a statement on the festival?s website.

One drug could cure 7 different cancers | SmartPlanet

Solid tumor cells carry a ?don?t eat me? signal to escape attacks by the immune system. Disrupting this tumor-protecting signal could mean developing a single drug that can fight at least 7 different types of cancer, a new study shows.

Tumor cells from a range of cancer types all express a protein called CD47 ? the ?don?t eat me? sign that prevents tumors from being chewed up by immune cells.

Solid tumors grow unchecked and metastasize to other sites by evading phagocytosis, the process of being engulfed and digested by immune cells. Years ago, Stanford scientists showed that drugs that block CD47 can eliminate tumors in mice with leukemia and lymphoma.

?What we?ve shown is that CD47 isn?t just important on leukemias and lymphomas,? says the new study?s lead author, Irving Weissman from Stanford. ?It?s on every single human primary tumor that we tested.?

In particular, they looked at: ovarian, breast, colon, bladder, glioblastoma (brain), hepatocellular carcinoma (liver), and prostate tumor cells.

They exposed tumor cells to immune cells called macrophages and anti-CD47 molecules in a petri dish. They also transplanted human tumors into the feet of mice, and when they treated the mice with anti-CD47, the tumors shrank and didn?t spread to the rest of the body:

• Only one of 10 mice treated with anti-CD47 had a lymph node with signs of cancer.
• Colon cancers transplanted into the mice shrank to less than one-third of their original size on average.
• In 5 mice with breast cancer tumors, anti-CD47 eliminated all signs of the cancer cells, and the animals remained cancer-free 4 months after the treatment stopped.

?We showed that even after the tumor has taken hold, the antibody can either cure the tumor or slow its growth and prevent metastasis,? Weissman says.

They also found that, while many normal cells in the body also have CD47 to avoid being destroyed, cancer cells have higher levels of CD47 than healthy cells. How much CD47 a tumor made could predict the survival odds of a patient.

Weissman?s team has received a $20 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to move the findings from mouse studies to human safety tests.

A 2010 Weissman study showed that cancer cells also carried an ?eat me? sign on them.

The new study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week.

Is your sales team killing your business? Seems counterintuitive, but sadly it is more common that you think. There are many ways they can kill your business in the exploding-train-derailment sort of way, but most of you know how to prevent those. What you are probably missing are these three ways your sales team is killing you slowly:

1. Saying Yes to Every Deal: Raise your hand if you think your sales team?s job is to go out and get every piece of business that they can find. Now those of you raising your hand please take that hand and smack yourself. Your sales team?s job is to go out and get the right business for you to complete. It is just as much a function of their job to protect you and your business from bad deals as it is to close good ones. Don?t be afraid to say no to a deal that is going to be more harm than it?s worth.
2. Lowering Your Prices: As a sales manager or business owner have you ever had a salesman come in and say ?We can win this deal, but only if we drop our price to ?.?? Remember that hand you raised earlier and smacked yourself with? Hit them with it next time they ask this. I?m guessing you had a pretty good idea of what you thought your value proposition was when you sent them out into the wild to sell for you. Lowering your prices is a great way to bleed off margin, make for additional stress for everyone in accounting, and kill any chance you have of making the right money on this customer or any referrals they send. More importantly, the first time you lower the price it will feel really bad, you?ll think about it for a while, and then ultimately decide it?s the right play. But the second time it?s not so hard, and it gets progressively easier until without even realizing it you?ve lowered your bar entirely.
3. The Client is Always Right: Yup, the tried and true mantra of customer service will kill you. I?m all for pleasing and delighting the customer as much as the next guy, but if you?ve failed at one or both of the above things, my guess is you?ve got clients in the pool who are demanding more of your time or product for less return, holding you hostage for payments because they want ?one more thing?, or generally making your life hell because they?re never quite happy. Remember that clients are made just like you and I, human and imperfect. They?ll be wrong just as often as you, and while you shouldn?t go pointing out all of their flaws, you should be willing to draw a line in the sand when you have to. Sometimes you just have the better position to fight from.

No go forth and diagnose these problems within your organization and make the changes to prevent them from leading to a slow painful death.

California struggling to prepare quake early warning system

Japan has one. So do Mexico, Taiwan, Turkey and Romania.

But California has struggled to develop and deploy an earthquake warning system that would give cities seconds of crucial time to prepare for the impact of a massive earthquake.

California is spending only a fraction of what Japan and Mexico have devoted, and scientists said the progress is so slow that they cannot say when the state might complete its own system.

Until recently, researchers were spending only about $400,000 a year developing the technology. Last year, they received a $6-million grant for work on a new prototype. But experts said it would cost about $150 million to build and $5 million a year to operate a system covering California and other quake-prone states along the Pacific.

Japan's system cost $1 billion to build and includes 1,000 GPS sensors to detect and monitor seismic waves.

One reason for the lack of interest, some experts say, is that unlike Mexico, Japan and the other countries with early warning systems, California has not experienced a truly catastrophic earthquake in more than a century.

"I think it'll happen. The question is whether we get it sooner than before we have a tragic earthquake or whether we have it after a tragic earthquake," said Thomas Heaton, a professor of engineering seismology at Caltech. "Unfortunately in the earthquake business, often things don't happen until we have a tragedy."

Officials in California have been working on a system for about five years. And as personal technology continues to evolve, their current warning plan is geared heavily toward social media and mobile communications.

Alerts of coming quake waves in California could be sent via Twitter and other forms of social media, with scientists hoping to get word out as broadly as possible. Alerts would also go up on TV and radio. With the warning, scientists hope that emergency crews would have time to open fire station doors, protect nuclear power plants, slow down trains and take other measures before the quake was felt.

Researchers have also launched a campaign for the public to attach accelerometers to home computers and smartphones that could transmit earthquake shaking to authorities in real time. They believe that this data, combined with information gleaned from underground sensors placed throughout the region, could help with the early warning system.

Waves from a quake move quickly through the ground, but electronic signals are far faster, allowing a warning to outrun the shaking.

Officials said the length of the warning depends on the quake's epicenter. A temblor along the San Andreas fault around the Salton Sea, for example, could give up to a full minute of warning time before shaking occurred in Los Angeles, officials said.

When Japan was rocked by a 9.0 earthquake last year, the warning system sent an alert to Tokyo before the seismic waves of the quake reached the city. The same thing happened in Mexico City on Tuesday after a 7.4 quake occurred near Acapulco.

Both systems are far from perfect. Both underestimated the size of their respective quakes, and in Mexico City warnings were not as widely distributed as they should have been.

Experts warn that Los Angeles presents special challenges for an early warning system that are less of a problem in Tokyo or Mexico City.

The systems in Japan and Mexico often detect seismic waves coming from quakes that erupt off the coast at some distance. Mexico City is actually more than a hundred miles from where these earthquakes spawn, said Caltech seismologist Pablo Ampuero, who is working on California's early warning efforts.

"They are worried about those earthquakes because the soil of Mexico City is soft as to amplify the shaking. It behaves like jelly when an earthquake reaches it," Ampuero said. "Even if an earthquake happens on a far coast, if it reaches Mexico City, it can cause severe damage."

By contrast, Southern California is crisscrossed by active fault lines such as Newport-Inglewood, Hollywood, Puente Hills and Whittier.

A major quake on those faults could be felt in L.A. almost immediately. By contrast, a quake on the San Andreas fault, which experts have long predicted would produce "The Big One," could provide more time.

"If an earthquake happens here, you don't have that much time to detect it and generate an alarm," Ampuero said. "That's why it's more challenging to have an efficient warning system here. Nevertheless, we have been working on this for several years and the technology is now reaching a maturing stage to make it feasible for an early warning system in California."

Despite these concerns, experts are convinced a system could save lives. Heaton of Caltech said that with adequate funding, a system could be working within three years. But it would probably require a public-private partnership, with utilities and other companies working to ensure the alerts get out quickly.

Mexico City's early warning system, which leans heavily on sirens to get the word out, is bare-bones compared to Japan's or what California researchers envision.

John Vidale of the University of Washington said early warning systems in Japan, Mexico, Taiwan and Romania all function under the same technological principle, detecting preliminary P waves that travel on the surface before the stronger S waves arrive. Japan uses particularly expensive GPS devices that are dropped into boreholes hundreds of feet below the surface.

The American model would be less expensive in part because it would not require the boreholes, Vidale said.

Still, Vidale said, "we are going to have to show that the costs of the system are outweighed by the benefits."

"Most of the time, GERD stems from one of two causes -- what you eat and how much you weigh -- but excessive weight is the most prominent," said Dr. Kenneth R. DeVault, chairman of the gastroenterology department at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., and co-author of the American College of Gastroenterology's guidelines for treating GERD.

"The most consistent factor is probably weight gain and obesity," DeVault said. "It's become pretty clear that a small amount of weight gain produces an increase in reflux symptoms. I'm not talking a large amount; I'm talking about 5 or 10 pounds, probably. Even if you're already overweight, increasing your weight will increase your risk of reflux over the next several months."

"Caffeine, for example, has been shown to relax the esophageal sphincter, increasing the chances of reflux," DeVault said.

"Eating fatty foods can also contribute to reflux because fats slow the emptying of the stomach, meaning there's more material left in the stomach that can be refluxed," he said.

Controversy about a suggestive Madonna video that includes religious imagery mixed with sexual content? Is it the 1980s again?

Madonna?s new video, ?Girl Gone Wild,? premiered on E! Tuesday night, and already is provoking mixed reactions. Some love it, some hate it, some are concerned about the use of relligious imagery, and others are saying that the singer is stealing ideas from Lady Gaga.

The bondage-infused video for the song "Girl Gone Wild" is packed full of sexual images mixed with religious symbolism. It begins with Madonna reciting the Catholic Act of Contrition, a prayer of repentence, and quickly displays a group of half-naked male dancers grabbing their crotches. Later, one man dons a crown of thorns.

But religious imagery and shocking the Catholic Church in which she was raised is nothing new for Madonna, and for some critics, that's exactly the problem.

?Madonna is finally running out of ideas and rehashing her own back catalogue? badly," writes Amelia Proud in the U.K.'s Daily Mail. "Madonna?s look echoes her Blonde Ambition period from the late ?80s into the early ?90s, but unlike this early video, which was banned by MTV for containing imagery of sadomasochism, voyeurism, and bisexuality, it is hardly shocking.?

Even some fans?aren't loving the video. Many point out that it seems to borrow elements from Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" video, while others point out that Gaga borrowed from Madonna, meaning the Material Girl is actually reusing her own concepts.
