In high school the two had thought of starting a computer-based programming and graphic design print shop, but their other jobs got in the way of realizing that dream.
Not long after, however, the two came together to start an Internet-based company.
?Jerry was on board and helped with all the design graphics and animation we needed,? Blakely said.
The pair started their company without any financing right as the dot-com bubble burst ? and no one wanted to invest in an Internet company in 2001, the men said. The original business concept failed and the two started taking on Web design projects to support themselves.
?But we hated not having recurring income, working project to project and eating one month and starving the next,? Blakely said.
Researching hot new technologies, the two young men discovered pretty much no one else was developing streaming and collaboration at the time.
Blakely and Chabolla became obsessed with the concept of a ?connected Web? where everyone using the Internet could see everyone else using it at the same time; similar to how a Webinar operates, but with more sophisticated options. And they found the tool that allowed them to design their masterpiece, Adobe Media Server.
?Richard invested all of our money into the software,? said Chabolla. ?He said, ?If this doesn?t work, we?ll have to go get regular jobs.? Fast forward 10 years later and we?re still here.?
Global growth
In 2007 people were just starting to care about streaming, Chabolla said. Already positioned to serve the market, Influxis grew quickly on that technology wave.
Privately held, Influxis has some 3,000 customers today and the business partners say most of their business is from repeat customers. The company helps two types of clients ? monthly customers and short-term, campaign-based clients.
About 65 percent, of the company?s business is in the U.S. and 35 percent is international, primarily in Europe, Latin America and Asia, Blakely said.
?We got a really great office space in the Valencia Industrial Center, have 30 employees, an operations and call center in one office and another office for development,? Blakely said.

Mindful of the risks, Romney is trying to put some distance between his agenda and the specifics of Ryan's budget proposals.
In an interview Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Romney and Ryan both offered words meant to reassure the elderly.
America is about more choices, Romney said, and "that's how we make Medicare work down the road." He said the program won't change for seniors currently counting on it. Ryan pitched in that his mother is a "Medicare senior in Florida."
During the Republican primary, Romney had called Ryan's budget a "bold and exciting effort" that was "very much needed" but held back from a full embrace.
In more general terms, Romney has spoken of providing "generous" but undetermined subsidies to help future retirees buy private insurance, or let them have the option of traditional Medicare. He's also endorsed a gradually increasing age to qualify for benefits.
Ryan, a conservative Wisconsin congressman and chairman of the House Budget Committee, calls his Medicare plan "premium support." Future retirees would get a fixed amount to use for health insurance. Democrats call it a voucher plan.
In theory, Ryan's plan could work, economists say. Instead of Medicare just paying all the medical bills that come in, the fixed government payment would limit how much taxpayer money flows into the program. That would force everyone, from individual retirees to the biggest hospitals, to watch costs.
Ryan has issued two versions of his plan with Democrats, showing it has some bipartisan appeal. But the versions passed by the House have had a hard partisan edge.
The devil's in the details. And there are lots of them that have yet to be ironed out.
"From the standpoint of public understanding, the Romney-Ryan ticket has a hill to climb," said health economist Joe Antos of the business-oriented American Enterprise Institute. "I think they can do it, but it's going to require some explaining. I think there are a lot of independents who are going to be nervous."
The political sensitivities are clear. Polls find that Americans lean heavily on Medicare to help keep them secure after retirement and are suspicious of proposed alternatives, such as Ryan's. Surveys also give Democrats an edge over Republicans when people are asked which party people most trust to handle Medicare. Democrats held a 48 percent-39 percent advantage on that issue in a June 2011 AP-GfK poll.
"This puts Medicare in play as a central issue in the campaign," said John Rother, president of the National Coalition on Health Care, a nonpartisan group representing a broad swath of players in the health care system.
For the most part, Ryan's plan would not directly affect people now in Medicare. One exception: In repealing Obama's health care law, Ryan would re-open the Medicare prescription coverage gap called the doughnut hole.
Under his plan, people now 54 and younger would go into a very different sort of Medicare. Upon becoming eligible, they would receive a government payment that they could use to pick a private insurance plan or a government-run program like traditional Medicare. The payment would be indexed to account for inflation, and that could be a problem if health care costs race ahead of the inflation rate.
The private plans would be regulated by the government, and low-income people, as well as those with severe health problems, would get additional assistance. People who pick plans with relatively generous benefits would pay more out of their own pockets.
Ryan would also gradually raise the Medicare eligibility age from the current 65 to 67.
Backers say the result of his Medicare plan would be a more affordable and sustainable program, both for taxpayers and beneficiaries. Currently, Medicare's giant trust fund for inpatient care is projected to run out of money in 2024.
But critics see a massive cost shift to beneficiaries.
"The only way to drive real savings is to set a lid on the growth in the voucher," said Democratic economist Judy Feder. "That most likely means shifting costs to beneficiaries, not controlling costs."
In an analysis earlier this year, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said some of the effects of Ryan's plan "would of necessity be a great deal stronger" than current law, which includes Medicare cuts in Obama's health care law yet to take place.
Under the most likely current budget scenario, Medicare spending for the typical 66-year-old would rise to $9,600 in 2030, or about 75 percent more than now, the CBO projected.
But under Ryan's plan, spending would rise more slowly to $7,400, or about 35 percent more than current levels.
That difference would result in a cost shift of thousands of dollars to individual retirees, critics say.
Under the previous version of Ryan's plan, a typical 65-year-old retiree would have been responsible for about two-thirds of his or her health care costs in 2030, according to the budget office. That translates to a cost increase of $6,350 a year, says the Obama campaign.
Ryan's proposal for turning Medicaid into a block grant program for the states would also have far-reaching consequences. It sharply reduces the future size of the program relative to the overall economy, the CBO said.
Even if states can run Medicaid more efficiently, they'd still face the difficult choice between cutting the program or pouring more of their own money into it, the budget office said.

But what does it mean to ?focus on the process??? It reasonably could mean that the Rams realized that playing the games in London could have a major impact on the P.R. portion of the process, which when dealing with pro sports franchises necessarily is a big part of any process in which the team is involved.
Indeed, in the inherently complex game of public relations involving a general public that may not have the time or inclination to study the nuances, the idea that the Rams made a fan-friendly move will resonate throughout the process of getting the stadium into the top 25 percent of all venues in the league, as required by the team?s lease.? If the Rams had followed through on the plans to export one regular-season game per year to London for each of the next three years, it would have been harder to get the fans to focus on the situation from the team?s perspective:? The CVC agreed in 1995 to a procedure for putting the Rams in a first-tier stadium by 2015, and the failure to make that happen will be the result of a decision by the CVC, not the Rams.
And so, if the CVC ultimately decides not to implement the final ruling of a panel of arbitrators who?ll determine what it will take to make the Edward Jones Dome a first-tier stadium, the Rams will have to decide whether to pull the plug on their lease after the 2014 season and potentially relocate.? By positioning the fan base to blame an ultimate move not on the Rams but on the CVC, the CVC has less cover for looking at the final decision from the arbitration and saying, ?No thanks.?
There?s also a chance that the decision to scuttle the two London games came not from the P.R. department but from legal.? With three neutral arbitrators soon determining what it will take to make the stadium a first-tier venue, the Rams have now slammed the door on the possibility that the CVC would try to taint (yes, Beavis, I said ?taint?) the panel by arguing that the Rams are lobbying for renovations so extensive and expensive in the hopes of a ruling that the CVC will be unable to accept, which then will open the door for a move to Los Angeles.? Or to London.? Or to anywhere but St. Louis.
We don?t expect Demoff to admit that there?s a strategy more intricate than ?the timing was wrong,? especially since Demoff and the rest of the organization are smart enough to have realized that ?the timing was wrong? before deciding to play one home game per year in London for each of what could be the final three years of the team?s lease.
The Rams and the CVC currently are playing high-stakes poker at the highest level of pro sports.? When it comes to Monday?s announcement, there?s got to be something more than something that was obvious before the decision to play three home games in London was made.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? A team at Children's National Medical Center has found that external stimulation has an impact on the postnatal development of a specific region of the brain. Published in Nature Neuroscience, the study used sensory deprivation to look at the growth and collection of NG2-expressing oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (NG2 cells) in the sensory cortex of the brain. This type of research is part of the Center for Neuroscience Research focus on understanding the development and treatment of white matter diseases.
NG2 cells can develop into oligodendrocytes progenitor cells that generate myelin, the protective material around the axons of neurons, but this is based on functional and developmental interactions with outside stimuli. With this kind of plasticity, or ability to change and mold a cell in different ways, the researchers were able to determine that sensory stimuli can control the number and positioning of developing NG2 cells.
"Understanding how external stimulation and experience impact the development of NG2 cells means that we can try to modulate these factors to help regulate and promote the expansion of these cells. This could ultimately have an impact on white matter diseases," stated Vittorio Gallo, PhD, study coordinator and Director of the Center for Neuroscience Research at the Children's Research Institute. "We will now investigate in more detail how sensory experience can regulate NG2 cell development, particularly how experience activates specific genes and molecular pathways in these cells."
Collectively called NG2 progenitors, these cells also serve as the primary source of cells to regenerate oligodendrocytes and myelin in the postnatal brain. Without myelin, the brain does not function properly. Myelination can be impaired for a number of reasons, resulting in mental retardation and developmental disabilities. Myelination, white matter growth and repair, and the study of complex mechanisms of pre- and postnatal brain development are a key focus of the Center for Neuroscience Research at Children's National, which also houses the White Matter Diseases Program, one of the largest clinical programs in the country for treating children with disorders that cause the brain's white matter to degenerate.

LONDON, Aug 12 (Reuters) - As women athletes leave the
London Olympics basking in unprecedented praise and attention,
former female Olympians have some advice for the women of 2012 -
keep up the fight.
The London Olympics have been hailed as the Women's Games,
with female athletes competing in all 204 national teams and in
all 26 sports for the first time as women boxers made their
debut.
The participation of the first women athletes from the
Islamic nations of Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar was seen as a
milestone in the battle for sex equality globally and another
step towards the Olympic committee goal of 50-50 participation.
Women outnumbered men on three of the five largest teams,
the United States, China, and Russia, bumping the number of
women up to 44 percent of athletes from 42 percent at Beijing.
At Barcelona 20 years ago, 25 percent of the athletes were
female and 34 teams had no women.
U.S. and Chinese women bagged more medals than male team
mates while women in the host British team won headlines galore
for snaring about half of Team GB's gold haul, with Briton
Nicola Adams becoming the first female Olympics boxing champion.
Former top female Olympians said the success of women at the
2012 Games should be used as a springboard to put sportswomen on
an equal footing with men in non-Olympics years when they
struggle for funding and for media coverage.
"Women have dominated at these Olympics and they should take
this opportunity to keep promoting themselves and their sports,"
said Nadia Comaneci, the Romanian gymnast who won five gold
medals at the 1976 Montreal and 1980 Moscow Games and now runs a
gym academy in the United States.
"There's a different mentality towards women in sport now
but there is still a competition between men and women. That
will never stop."
LOOKS VERSUS PERFORMANCE
Women's rights campaigners welcomed the progress at the
Olympics where neutrality and equality are two key values.
The Olympics are seen as an opportunity every four years to
promote women's sport and gender equality generally because one
set of rules applies to all countries.
However, they said the fight was not over, with women
competing in 30 fewer events than men in London and only 132
gold medals available for women compared to 162 for men.
Campaigners were outraged that female Japanese footballers
and Australian women's basketball players had to travel to
London in economy seats while the men flew in business class.
A UK study by the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation
found women's sports get 0.5 percent of commercial sports
sponsorship, 5 percent of media coverage, and 43 percent of
teenage girls say they do not have female sporting role models.
Jessica Mendoza, who won gold with the U.S. softball team in
Athens 2004 and silver in Beijing 2008, said the explosion in
social media gave female athletes the means to maintain the
higher profile they had won at the London Games.
"Women athletes have to create their own brand, find their
voice, and stay connected with the thousands of fans they now
have," said Mendoza, past president of the U.S.-based Women's
Sports Foundation.
"With social media you don't have to rely on the major media
outlets any more. This is the time for women athletes to shine."
British cyclist Lizzie Armitstead, a silver medallist, used
the podium at London to highlight the "overwhelming sexism"
persisting in sport in salary and in media coverage, in which
women athletes are often called girls and looks can trump
performance.
GLAMOUR CARD
U.S. gymnast Gabby Douglas, 16, who won two gold medals at
London, came under fire on Twitter for her "unkempt" hair style.
American Lolo Jones, who finished fourth in the 100m
hurdles, fought back tears when faced with a press report that
suggested, like former tennis player Anna Kournikova, she used
her looks to get more attention that her performance deserved.
British weightlifter Zoe Smith blasted Twitter trolls when
they attacked her for looking too manly.
London Mayor Boris Johnson described the "semi-naked women"
playing beach volleyball as "glistening like wet otters".
Former British Olympian Denise Lewis, who won gold in the
heptathlon at Sydney 2000, said it was up to each athlete to
decide how they wanted to portray themselves publicly.
She said it was harder for women to grab headlines and make
a career from their sport so playing the glamour card could help
them get attention but only if they succeeded in their sport
first.
"I see nothing wrong with showing that athletes bodies can
be beautiful, strong and feminine," Lewis, who has become a
television personality, told Reuters. "We need positive role
models to encourage more girls into sport and showing women
athletes can be strong and feminine can help."
As the London Olympics come to a close, the overwhelming
view was that women had fuelled the success of 2012 Games.
Sebastian Coe, chairman of London organising committee
LOCOG, said some of the big, high profile moments at London 2012
focused on women, such as the involvement of athletes from Saudi
Arabia where Muslim clerics decry women's sport as immodest.
"I think we have really moved this agenda on in a big way in
London," Coe told reporters.

How it works
Plan B basically takes advantage of a loophole in older, pre-Honeycomb Android versions that lets Google remotely fire up an app, from, in this case, the Google Play website.
For the end user, there are only two steps to take after losing your phone: first, log into Google Play from any Web browser, find and install the 72kb app, specifying your lost device. The app will automatically install on the lost device and start running.
Second, check your Gmail account associated with Google Play. Within minutes, you should receive an email estimating your device's geolocation on a Google Map. For the next ten minutes, Plan B will refine the location and keep emailing you updates. If GPS is turned on, it can send you precise latitude/longitude coordinates.
Did Plan B Find My Phone?
I tested Plan B with a "lost" Samsung Galaxy S II running Android 2.3.5. Setup was fast. Minutes after I installed the app onto the device through my Web browser, I received an email from Lookout with a Google Map showing a radius of where my phone could be. Over the next 20 emails I received ten more email updates, with the location fine-tuned down to a pinpoint on a Google Map. Geolocation can't get as specific as, say, showing that your missing phone is just underneath your bed, but it can narrow it down to a building or street.
If the GPS on your phone is off, Plan B will try to automatically enable it. And, if that doesn't work, the app uses cell-tower triangulation to approximate the location, though GPS geolocation is more accurate. The app wasn't able to turn on my device's GPS, however.
