Dr. Charlotte G. Garman 95, early childhood education leader ...

Dr. Charlotte G. Garman, 95, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Moravian Manor in Lititz.

She was married 58 years to J. Wilbur Garman, who preceded her in death in 1999. A lifetime resident of Lancaster County, Charlotte was the daughter of the late Will and Leah Glasmire, of Bareville.

After receiving a bachelor?s degree from Elizabethtown College, Charlotte enjoyed a long and fulfilling career in the field of early childhood education. She decided to pursue higher education and graduated with distinction from Temple University?s master and doctoral programs. She taught kindergarten for 15 years at Nathan Sheaffer School in Manheim Township, where she became known as Lancaster?s leading kindergarten teacher and early childhood expert. In 1966, she was invited to be the first director of the Early Childhood Education Department for the state of Pennsylvania. During her 11 years of service in this role, Charlotte was largely responsible for the growth and expansion of children?s programs in public and private schools. She authored the state kindergarten guide and disseminated over 100 publications on early childhood and parent education. She was a major resource on matters of entrance age, laws for children under six and alternative programs for young children. After her retirement in 1977, she conducted workshops and conferences, gave speeches and performed as consultant for curriculum planning and child growth/development for the state.

Charlotte was honored for her work throughout the commonwealth. In 1977, she was named Outstanding Educator by the Pennsylvania Elementary Principals Association. In 1984, she was named Optimists Woman of the Year and was granted the Alumni Educate for Service award by Elizabethtown College in recognition of her contributions to the teachers and children of Pennsylvania.

In addition to her educational achievements, Charlotte was president of the National Association of Early Childhood Consultants and a lifetime member of PSIA and the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. A member of the Lancaster Church of the Brethren since 1927, she was an active participant in children?s religious education and church music. She was chairman of the board for Lancaster?s first Children?s Museum, better known as the Hands-on House.

Charlotte dearly loved her family and received great joy from them. She was blessed with good health, a loving marriage, a family who loved her, many friends and a successful career. She enjoyed entertaining, playing bridge, gardening, traveling, playing the piano and spending time in Ocean City, NJ.

Charlotte is survived by her three children: Elizabeth (Betsy) Shelly, of Lancaster, Dr. J. Frederick, husband of Sarah Garman, of Lititz; and Susan Kirkland, of Lancaster; six grandchildren: Christina, wife of Ned Faust, of Boalsburg; Douglas Shank, of Lancaster; Kelly Shank, of Seabrook, Md.; Andrew, husband of Julie Garman, of Lititz; Kathryn, wife of Bradley Mader, of Pottstown; and David Kirkland, of Salisbury, N.C.; five great-grandchildren: Lindsay and Spencer Faust, of Boalsburg; Ethan and Ryan Garman, of Lititz; and Caleb Mader, of Pottstown; two brothers: William, husband of Grace Glasmire, of Lancaster; and David, husband of Ann Glasmire, of Lakeside, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers: Joe and M. Alexander Glasmire.

A service was held at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren on Aug. 1. Following the service, interment took place in Bareville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lancaster Church of the Brethren Children?s Ministries, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, PA 17601.
