Can Pals help kids get their voices heard (video)

Can Pals help kids get their voices heard

Message from Me isn't the only way Carnegie Mellon's CREATE Labis helping kids communicate. The lab's Hear Me team has come up with Can Pals, a clever twist on the tin can phone that helps students share their stories with the world. Kids record their non-fictional tales on computers or via mics brought in by the Hear Me team, who will edit and upload them to the site and transfer them onto the electronic cans. Afterwards, kids can draw a picture or add some text to a label, which is adhered to the outside.

The Hear Me team then brings them to another school, where the stories are shared with other students, who can pull off the labels and respond to the speakers. The group has also designed CanEX displays that are already at some businesses around town, letting customers catch a glimpse into the lives of local children. CREATE calls it an "empowerment tool for advocacy" -- we can't help but refer to it as This American Life or The Moth for kids. Either way, pretty cool.

Iraq: Attacks kill 4 in security forces, 1 child

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi insurgents launched a new wave of attacks across the country targeting security forces and a local politician on Wednesday morning, killing four members of the security forces and one child, police and health officials said.

Militants in a speeding car attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint, opening fire from pistols fitted with silencers in Baghdad's western Mansour neighborhood, a police officer said. Two soldiers died in that attack.

The officer added that a roadside bomb exploded shortly afterward as a police patrol was heading to the scene of the Mansour attack, killing one policeman and wounding six people.

Shortly before dawn, a sniper shot at a police patrol on foot in the capital's eastern Mashtal neighborhood, killing one policeman, another police officer said.

In the northern oil-rich city of Kirkuk, a parked motorcycle packed with explosives went off near the passing convoy of a local politician, killing a 7-year old child and wounding four other people, a police officer said. Politician Ali al-Hashemi, a Turkoman, escaped unharmed, he added.

Kirkuk, about 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, is home to mix of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, who all are competing to control the city.

Health officials in nearby hospitals confirmed the causality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

The attacks came a day after insurgents attacked Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad by car bombs and mortar rounds, killing nine people and wounding 26.

Civilians, security forces and officials are the favorite targets for insurgents seeking to undermine public confidence in government efforts to restore security.

Meanwhile, authorities summoned some employees of the Central Bank of to give their testimonies following allegations of financial wrongdoing, a judicial spokesman said.

Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar of the Supreme Judicial Council said two groups of bank employees have been brought so far before the judges in the past two days, but he gave no specific numbers. None of the employees has been arrested.

Arrest warrants have been issued for 16 bank officials over corruption allegations raised by a special parliamentary committee formed to probe the bank. They include longtime governor Sinan al-Shabibi, a politically independent economist who has led the institution since 2003. He is out of the country.

New insights into membrane-assisted self-assembly

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? How proteins and virus capsids -- complex protein structures that encase the genetic material of viruses -- form structures near to a fluctuating membrane is simulated by physicist Richard Matthews with advanced computational techniques.

Matthews performs research as a Lise-Meitner-Fellow in the Computational Physics Group of the University of Vienna under the direction of Christos Likos, professor for Multiscale Computational Physics. The results are relevant to the understanding of biophysical processes and appear in the current issue of Physical Review Letters.

"In our current paper we present new computational results that explore how membranes may influence crucial biological processes," explains Richard Matthews, Lise-Meitner-Fellow at the University of Vienna and first author of the study. The focus of the investigation is the self-assembly of microscopic particles, the formation of structures or patterns without human intervention. More specifically, the effect of the interactions between membranes and proteins, which can influence the formation of ordered structures in cells, is considered.

Self-assembly has become a hot topic in recent years. Many of the most astonishing examples are found in nature, from tiny motors (e.g. the flagellum motor) to virus capsids with perfect spherical forms. Many researchers have also tried to improve our understanding by representing the assembly of such structures with models. In order to gain clear insight it is preferable that these models are as simple as possible. This approach has been very successful in reproducing key features of experiments, whilst also uncovering new aspects. In reality, these processes do not occur in isolation and, in fact, many happen on, or in the vicinity of, membranes, a fact that has been previously neglected in the construction of simple models.

Advanced Simulation Techniques

The research aims to find out the general properties of these fascinating systems by applying state of the art simulation techniques. This requires everything to be calculated on a computer. Due to the complexity of the task, high performance computers are necessary. "In our work we have applied advanced simulation techniques, which allowed us to see how interactions with a membrane influence self-assembly," explains Richard Matthews. "We determined that membranes promote self-assembly and also find that our model reproduces structures that are very similar to those seen in nature."

New Jersey teens charged with murder

The body of a missing 12-year-old girl was found in a recycling bin not far from her home on Monday. Two brothers have been charged, though the motive is still unclear.?

By Geoff Mulvihill,?Associated Press / October 23, 2012

Investigators gather at a house on Clayton Avenue in Clayton NJ on Tuesday, after the discovery of a girl's body in a home's recycling bin. Gloucester County prosecutors say a body believed to be that of Autumn Pasquale was found around 10 p.m. Monday.

A teenage boy lured a 12-year-old?girl?into his house under the guise of getting parts for her treasured bicycle and then, with his older brother, killed her, police said Tuesday. The?girl's disappearance had sparked a frantic search by residents of her small?New?Jersey?town until a tip from the boys' mother led police to her body, stuffed into a home recycling bin.

The boys, ages 15 and 17, were charged with murdering Autumn Pasquale, who disappeared while riding her BMX bike Saturday, a little more than a week before what would have been her 13th birthday. She appeared to have been strangled, Gloucester County prosecutor Sean Dalton said at a late-day?news?conference.

The boys' mother had come forward with information about a posting on a son's Facebook account, Dalton said. He wouldn't say what was on the website or discuss a possible motive for the killing, but said there was no sign of sexual assault.

Autumn was lured to the house, where they apparently lived with their mother and stepfather, for the purpose of getting parts for her treasured BMX bike, which she rode frequently and talked about on her Facebook pages.

Both brothers were charged with counts including first-degree murder, body disposal and tampering with evidence. The 15-year-old was also charged with luring.

The boys' names were not released because they are juveniles, but Dalton said his office is considering trying to have the case transferred to adult court. The boys turned themselves in with their attorneys, public defenders, but it could not be immediately determined who they are.

The?girl's?body was found around 10 p.m. Monday in a recycling bin on a vacant property next to the home where the boys live, police said. The suspects had attended a community vigil for her shortly before the discovery, several residents said.

Autumn's BMX bike and other belongings were recovered from the boys' home, the prosecutor said. He did not detail all the items, but a backpack matching a description of the?girl's?was also seen being taken out.

One of the three teenage brothers who friends said live at the house traded BMX bike parts, according to a according to a young man, Corey Hewes, 19, who said he was among those who traded with him.

Neighbors also said the house was a place where teens frequently hung out and had parties.

The home is just blocks from Autumn's house and from the town hall, where thousands of people gathered for the tearful candlelight vigil to pray for her safe return in this town of 8,000 about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Philadelphia.

THE WINNERS OF THE FALL 2012 CFCCBCCC : CrossFit Center City

Posted by crossfitcentercity on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 ? 3 Comments?

?It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.?-Ernest Hemingway

Back in September, more than sixty of you decided it was time to tell your?inner two year old?to shut it, set some short-term goals, and COMMIT to 30 days of solid nutrition. Around here, we call this month of commitment the Crossfit Center City Body Composition Change Challenge (affectionately titled the CFCCBCCC). There were no overarching ?rules? (and there never will be ? we?re all coming to this from different places, after all). All we asked was that each participant did what they said they were going to do for the duration of the Challenge.

We had tons of fun this time around ? a fullblown nutrition seminar to kick things off, weekly informal Q&A?s to help you guys tweak as you went along and lively discussions on the blog and our kickass Facebook group throughout (and now I have a stellar list of blogs on my Google Reader so I can keep tabs on everyone?s eating FOREVER!) You guys took the information we provided and ran with it, holding yourselves and each other accountable to the goals you set at the beginning.?

The amazing results speak for themselves.?

Overall winners:

The Nutrition team selected an overall male and female winner based on measured results (both aesthetic and performance) as well as adherence to stated goals. Our winners are splitting a truly epic cash prize pot ? $395 each! Congratulations to you both ? this is a very well-deserved honor!

1ST PLACE: TRAVIS

Without a doubt, Travis experienced some of the most astounding results I?ve seen in my long history of BCCC-ing over the past several years. Well, I take that back. It?s unfair to say he merely ?experienced? these results, because that would imply that he sat back and let them happen. ?Absolutely, without a doubt, Travis ACHIEVED what he set out to do. He faithfully logged his food?every. single. day. He knew what he had to do, and he did it unfailingly, for the entire month. And when the dust settled, the numbers told the story ? nearly 30 pounds of weight lost in 30 days, 6 inches lost around his waist, and a pretty solid preservation of muscle mass. Travis is the perfect example of what happens when you surround yourself with support and the tools you need, put your head down, and just get it done. -M

Can you say a few words about your goals during this round of the BCCC?

My goals for this challenge were to eat Paleo, no alcohol, no dairy other high quality butter, no fruit, 1 small cup of caffeinated beverage per day, eat fermented food every day, and get to the gym 5 days per week. ?I wanted to maximize fat loss during the challenge and relearn good eating habits.

What did you like best about the BCCC?

I really liked keeping a photo food log. ?It was easy to do and created a strong sense of accountability.

What was the hardest part about the BCCC?

The most difficult thing part of the challenge for me was reducing my caffeine consumption. I think it would have been easier to give it up cold turkey rather than just have one cup per day.

There were some days that I was bored with my meals. ?I think it just boiled down to variety. I was cooking large meals and then eating a lot of leftovers. Cutting recipes in half so I?m not stuck eating the same thing every day has allowed me to try more new dishes.

What was your favorite recipe?

I made homemade breakfast sausage for the first time and it was amazing.

I ate a lot of burgers during the challenge since it was pretty much my go to option when I went out to eat. The best burger I had was one I made at home. I made bison burgers loosely based on the recipe for Fiery Jalape?o Buffalo Burgers in Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo. They were amazing!

Any advice to someone who?s trying the BCCC for the first time?

If you have a really busy schedule like me then it is important to plan your meals for the week. Block off the time you need to shop for the right foods and prep as much as you can ahead of time. ?You don?t want to be in the middle of a busy week-from-hell and start making poor choices because you don?t have the right foods on hand.

What are you adding back now that the BCCC is over? What habit is sticking around?

Now that the challenge is over I?m drinking as much coffee as want! ?Other than that I plan on continuing to eat very cleanly but I?m going to allow a cheat meal once a week. ?I still have a way to go to meet my body composition goals so my hope is that by the time I get there my eating habits will be permanently changed.

1ST PLACE: ANAHI

?Ana has been a BCCC?er from the very beginning, and it?s one of the reasons that I feel her journey resonated so strongly with all of us. Hers is the perfect example of why we a) nag about food quality and b) really encourage you to just TRY taking things to the next level, no matter how miserable and impossible it may seem, for only 30 days! I?m so excited to report that Anahi lost over 10 pounds, as well as inches all over her body (while preserving muscle mass). She also crushed her 2K row time by 15 seconds and got her FIRST DEADHANG PULLUP. She?s a shining example of what happens when you finally decide it?s time to take the plunge.?

Can you say a few words about your specific goals for this round of the BCCC?

?I have been trying to get back down to my ?fighting weight? (what I call my weight 10 years ago) since I started at CFCC, but through two past BCCCs where I?controlled macros and?reduced but didn?t completely cut out sugar, grains and alcohol, I didn?t get the results I wanted. This time I decided to just go all in and see what happened.?

?

What did you like best about the BCCC this time around?

?The great thing about being at CFCC for so long is that I have had the benefit of nutrition education all along, including seminars, ?helpful suggestions from coaches (and totally deserved gentle nagging from Erin) about my eating/drinking habits. So, I had a decent idea going in of what to eat, how much and when. Also, I found the BCCC group on Facebook was an excellent resource for learning, sharing recipes, commiserating, and developing community with the other participants.?

?

What was the hardest/what did you hate the most??

I can honestly say? and this is hard for me to believe? I didn?t really have any problem sticking to the program! I had already cut out dairy (except butter), gluten and most grains, so this was just a couple of steps beyond that. I just put it in my head that I was doing this, and that it was only for 30 days. I only had a few internal freak-outs about wanting carbs where I hated everyone ? but that is not uncommon for me under normal circumstances.?

What was your favorite meal?

?A stir fry with shrimp, bacon, brussels sprouts and grassfed butter that my boyfriend made me stands out. (That was the day I overdosed on bacon.) ?I am also now a huge proponent of eating Landjagr for breakfast!?

?

What advice would you give to someone that?s new to the BCCC?

?Read all the resources that are provided, and make some bold changes, but don?t get too hung up on being 100% perfect and thinking you need to become this amazing Paleo wonder chef all of a sudden. Just set some definite rules that you can stick to, have fun experimenting with crockpot recipes, eat real food, get excited about training, and don?t freak out. It?s only 30 days, and you will feel great.?

?

What habit/change in behavior are you planning to continue now that it?s over?

?I am definitely doing to stick with no dairy, no gluten and go mostly grain-free except the occasional cheat meal. And? as much as I hate to admit this: the thing I felt the biggest benefit from was not drinking. I am one of those 1 ? 3 glasses a day winos, and unfortunately, that habit has got to go, because I honestly feel 10 years younger without it!?

RUNNERS-UP:

Okay, we couldn?t help it. We were so blown away by everyone?s before and after pictures that we decided we had to publicly recognize the awesome ? so we are awarding a prize for Male & Female Runner Up. Each runner up will receive a $100 gift card to Lululemon.

RUNNER-UP #1 ? GABBY

First of all, I stole this montage from Gabby?s blog, which incidentally has my favorite blog title ever. The ?before? pictures are from a year ago, but I think they reflect a continued commitment to health and performance and the knowledge that sometimes it?s more than just a short-term destination, it?s a long-term journey. During this particular 30 day challenge, Gabby lost more than 2 inches around her waist, an inch around her hips and a half-inch under her bust. This time, though -??I specifically wanted to recognize how meaningful it was that she finally decided to ditch chasing a number on the scale in favor of chasing health and performance, because I know just how hard it can be to break that cycle. Gabby is a great example of how hard work and consistency coupled with a great attitude can take you very far!

Can you say a few words about your specific goals for this round of the BCCC?

?My goals were mostly performance based this time around. I have stopped focusing on weight loss as being the only success factor.

?Also, I sometimes tend to be negatively charged- saying I can?t do something before I have even tried it or focusing on a past failure. I tried very hard for the past 30 days to stop the negative thoughts, to focus on my own success and the success of those around me.

?Positivity goes a long way. I think it helped me reach my performance goals!

What did you like best about the BCCC this time around?

?This was my 4th challenge and by far the easiest that I have been through. I like that I know how a bad food decision makes me feel and 95% of the time it?s not worth it. ?I also like that I had no weight goals- I am so over the scale. I am stronger, leaner, and in better shape than I have ever been in my life.

What was the hardest/what did you hate the most?

?There actually wasn?t anything I hated this time around. I don?t really miss the stuff I am not supposed to eat because I know how it will make me feel and effect my performance both at the gym and work.

Okay, truth, sometimes I miss candy, especially gummies.

What was your favorite meal?

?Spaghetti squash with paleo pesto (basil, olive oil, lemon, garlic, salt and pepper) with grilled chicken. Also, the bora bora fireballs from Well Fed are out of this world delicious.

What advice would you give to someone that?s new to the BCCC?

?Always read ingredients, you would be surprised what?s in packaged foods. There is no cheating only bad decisions, so try to make good ones because in the end it makes it makes these challenges so much more worthwhile. ?30 days can change your whole perspective on training and food, it?s all good stuff!

What habit/change in behavior are you planning to continue now that it?s over?

I cut milk from my coffee during the last BCCC, I have stuck with it and it has made a huge difference for me. I also will continue to avoid gluten. Generally, trying to make good decisions, reading ingredients, and constantly reminding myself how I used to go to bed every night with a tummy ache. Eating clean means I no longer have daily stomach aches and I sleep very soundly.

RUNNER-UP #2 ? JOEY

?We?d be remiss if we didn?t recognize Mr. Hand. Consistently positive and excited, Joey approached the BCCC with boundless enthusiasm. He listened to our suggestions and took our recommendations to heart, posted to the blog and the Facebook page regularly in support of his fellow BCCC?ers, he attended every Q&A and asked questions and offered tips and advice. He emerged nearly 11 pounds lighter and 2 inches leaner around the waist. His stellar results reflect his hard work and great attitude.

Can you comment on your specific goals during the BCCC?

My specific goals during the BCCC were met with incredible results. The mindfulness of what you put in your body to fuel yourself was a very good experiment. It helped in every aspect in my life. Sleep, being present, maintaining energy levels and killing it in the gym @ CFCC.

What did you like best about the BCCC?

The best thing I liked about the BCCC is that you didn?t do it alone. You have the support of a lot folks with great ideas and your able to share that with them.

What was the hardest part of the BCCC?

The hardest part was breaking certain habits. For me it was artificial sweeteners and flavored cream in my coffee and cutting out alcohol completely. My coffee was like drinking a milkshake before. Now I have grown to like the taste of coffee black. As for alcohol, I will continue to indulge in adult beverages, but be more mindful about what kinds. Top shelf liquors all the way. lol

What was your favorite meal?

My favorite meal was a large turkey my girlfriend and I made one Sunday. It was a perfect smell while watching football.

Any advice for someone new to the BCCC?

Anyone starting the BCCC for the first time I advise anyone to make realistic goals and don?t be too hard on yourself. Keep going, even if the results take sometime to see in the mirror. The body is a wonderful tool and it takes time to learn new things.

What habits do you plan on keeping now that the BCCC is over?

Keeping my coffee black, choosing quality spirits, and making overall good food choices.

Thank you all for an amazing month ? I hope it was as illuminating for each of you as it was for us! I think that the community that?s building up around our respective journeys towards health and fitness is one of the most valuable things about being members of Crossfit Center City.?We are so proud of your hard work and commitment to yourselves and to each other.

That said, have a WONDERFUL holiday season, because the BCCC will be BACK in January 2013?

Surface RT review: Microsoft's new?tablet is?mixed blessing

18 hrs.

Surface RT, Microsoft's first foray into personal computing, is a hardware?success, and the company should be proud. Windows RT, the operating system that runs on it, is less of a reason for self-back-patting, however. While it doesn't completely tarnish the Surface experience, it often comes darn near, and it certainly keeps this from being a home run for Microsoft.

The promise of Surface is simple: You get a tablet when you want a tablet, and you get a laptop when you want a laptop. For the most part this is true. You can lounge with your Netflix videos and Kindle books, you can listen to all-you-can-eat music or stream rented movies with integrated Xbox services, using the "Modern" style of navigation that's easy to flip through with a finger.

You also get an Office suite that includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint, along with a surprisingly useful pair of keyboard-and-trackpad options ? the Touch Cover and the Type Cover ? which are sold separately but should be a required purchase for anyone going the Surface route.

Having used the tablet for the better part of a week, for both work and play, on land and in the air, I can say that these two modes can both be satisfactory. In fact, on an airplane, the size of the 10.6-inch-screen tablet is perfect for a tray table, the built-in kickstand makes the whole thing extra stable when watching a movie, and the Touch Cover stays out of sight (adding to stability) when not needed, and flips out easily when you're ready for typing.?

I keep falling in love with the thing, only to be yanked out of infatuation by the recurring appearance of "classic" Windows. It's not just when I launch Office apps, which are not touch friendly and require a mouse/keyboard interaction; it even happens when interacting with the tablet in ways that really don't necessitate the old interface. For instance:

  • Why do I have to go deep into classic Windows to add music to the finger-friendly Xbox Music app?
  • Why are there two control panels, a Windows 8 version and a classic version, with overlapping settings and controls?
  • And if I am forced to interact with Windows of olde, then?why can't I install my own?apps, such as the Chrome browser, or migrate?files from an old Windows PC to this supposedly Windows-endowed machine?

The truth is, I really wish I could be blissfully ignorant of the inner workings of this operating system. The only benefit I see to the classic Windows environment?is the ability to enjoy Microsoft's bread-and-butter productivity apps, so why not just launch them separately, instead of inside faux Windows 7? I am having a hard time seeing why these things must go hand in hand, especially when no other maker of Windows software will be inclined to release its software in this way. (That is, they will either build new apps in the Modern UI, or they will continue to support full Intel-chip laptops and tablets with classic Windows apps.)

OK, I've made the point, and it's not the most original of points. A lot of people are trying to understand Microsoft's keeping-old-Windows-while-fundamentally-reinventing-Windows approach that is Windows 8. It's especially perplexing in Windows RT, where you seriously get zero benefit of classic Windows, but now that I've made that clear, it's time to get back to the tablet itself, and why it really can be so charming.

Let's start with battery life.

Having never met a Windows laptop that didn't die a quiet, lonesome death every time I left it unplugged overnight, I was stunned to see how exceptionally well the Surface RT manages power. Even under heavy use, the battery will carry you at least eight hours, but even more impressive is the fact that if you leave it sitting for hours or even?days on end, the battery will?show little if any signs of expenditure. Even if you have your Exchange email, messaging and all kinds of social feeds on, you can expect very little draw when your screen is off. Better still, the battery charges quickly, and can be completely topped off in two hours.

When it comes to Surface engineering marvels, another is the ultra-suave $119?Touch Cover and its chiclet-key-endowed sibling, the $129?Type Cover. Microsoft has long been a major designer of mice and keyboards, and Panos Panay, the hardware guy in charge of Surface development, came from keyboards, but that still?doesn't prepare you for how elegant a job the company did on this. I hate to say that it's Apple-like in its simple yet high functionality, but there's really no other company that could integrate such an accessory with such grace.

So what is it? A pressure sensitive pad that you type on? What's the big deal? I promise you, get to a Microsoft store on Oct. 26, if only to try this out. The thing is so smart, it knows when you're just resting your fingers on the keys and when you really are trying to get words out. And the popping sounds you hear when you type, while?seeming?corny at first, actually give you the feedback you need to touch type without looking, enough to make you forget that all you're really doing is slamming your fingers down on a fake-suede placemat.

In the end, I think I prefer the mechanical keyboard that is integrated into the Type Cover, but in terms of pure, original engineering, the Touch Cover is the greater accomplishment.

When Microsoft hosted reporters at its campus in order to introduce the Surface tablet, the company gave a great deal of attention to the screen. The gist of the discussion, led by all-around Microsoft Research genius Steven Bathiche, focused on why screen resolution ? in the form of the "retina" displays found on the iPad and other Apple products ? are just one part of a discussion that should involve other factors including screen construction, contrast and graphics processing.?

Bathiche's bottom line: The way we perceive images on an LCD screen can't be boiled down to just one number. He's right that in most cases,?the Surface's screen looks as good or better than an iPad's. Still, when you're looking at straight text, it falls short of the iPad in resolution. If you just want to sit around and read books on a tablet, the full-sized?iPad is still the champ (even?though Apple has to pay for that bonus screen resolution with extra battery juice).

I only have two actual hardware gripes about the Surface RT. They are minor, but worth mentioning.

The magnetic power connector never locks in?without some fiddling, and the wear and tear is already starting to show after just?a week. This comes as a shock given that a) the magnetic Type Cover and Touch Cover lock into the Surface so smoothly with so little coaxing b) the power connector is essentially a ripoff of Apple's MagSafe charging cable, which locks in easily, and c) I haven't had to charge the thing very much!

The other surprising failure is the speaker system. They're not just tinny, as most mobile device's speakers are ? they distort sound when any volume is applied. It was as if, in the midst of all this thought going to every other aspect of the design, the speakers were simply forgotten.

As you use Surface RT, what you see is the robustness and power of something that isn't just an overgrown phone. The way you can view two apps at once ? Twitter and a movie, or a movie and mail, or mail and a photo album ? lends more credence to the idea of not just consuming content but creating it. (And why not do both at the same time?)

If you're a wired person with networked hard drives, Bluetooth speaker systems and DLNA media receivers, you will find that the Surface is built to support all of them, straight out of the box ? though not always without trouble.

The USB port on the side will take your disks and peripherals like OMG a real computer! You can add an HDMI or VGA connection with $40 adapters. And if you value cheap storage like I do, you will be glad to know that you can add a fast 64GB Micro SD card for just $43, so you don't have to regret not splurging on the high-end 64GB model.

And lest you think you caught me in a contradiction, I will state plainly that none of the power features I have mentioned require classic Windows to exist ? some are even found in Android devices.

The next stage for Microsoft isn't actually convincing you to buy this thing. If you have some money and a real fondness for the ways of Windows, you could jump right in and have a good time, and if you're shopping for gifts for your grandma, well, any of the iPads would be a way better bet.

No, the next stage for Microsoft is to drum up so much third-party app support for this thing that everybody's like wow, you can do all that? Because right now, there's a gap between what you can imagine doing on this thing and what developers actually let you do with it.

Ah developers?...?You can practically hear an echo in the Windows 8?app store right now. There's a serious lack of games and, aside from Netflix and Kindle Reader, not much major video, music and book apps.

I am glad to say that NBC News is in there, too, yet while it looks good, most or all of the apps I tried out on the Surface?ran jerkily, without the grace you'd expect given this machine's hardware specs. The conclusion is that nothing has been optimized for Surface RT, and that even developers who have taken the plunge have much work to do before their customers will be happy. It may be a long while before anything great turns up.?

Surface RT, available starting at $499 for a Wi-Fi model with 32GB of storage, should in no way be written off. It may have a hard time catching up to the iPad ??especially now that its entry price is $329?? but when it comes to replacing PCs,?it's the only other tablet that matters. And if Microsoft can get developers fired up ? and hopefully sort out the schizophrenia of the classic Windows/Modern UI experiences ? then it will be following Apple in a way that should be a victory for all of us. It will be a true shame if this thing ends up on the pile of nifty ideas that went nowhere (Zune HD, anyone?), but if it does, we'll know why.

To get a better sense of the Surface RT experience, please watch my video, embedded at the top and bottom of this review.

Italy bans Novartis flu vaccines pending tests

ROME/ZURICH (Reuters) - Italy banned the sale and use of anti-influenza vaccines produced by Novartis on Wednesday pending tests for possible side effects, prompting authorities in Switzerland to also take precautionary steps.

The Italian Health Ministry advised citizens not to buy or use the drugs Agrippal, Fluad, subunit Influpozzi and adjunvated Influpozzi until further notice.

It said 487,738 vaccine doses were affected, and the move came after the Italian Pharmaceutical Agency decided further tests on the products may be necessary following indications of possible side effects.

Switzerland's drug watchdog then also raised a precautionary red flag for flu vaccines Agrippal and Fluad, saying that at most 160,000 doses were affected.

"Given the current unclear situation Swissmedic has issued a halt to deliveries for the cited vaccines and recommends not using them until further notice," it said.

Preliminary investigations had shown Italy's ban came after the discovery of white particles in the injections, which could suggest some of the components of the vaccine had clumped together, Swissmedic said.

Novartis said it was cooperating with Italian health authorities to understand the reasons behind the decision, and it had already provided authorities with an assessment in support of the quality, efficacy and safety of the vaccines.

Last week, Italy's Health Ministry said Netherlands-based vaccine maker Crucell, a unit of U.S. drugmaker Johnson & Johnson, had suspended a delivery of 2.36 million seasonal flu vaccine doses to Italy after finding problems with two lots of it.

The ministry said last week it would make up the shortfall by purchasing more doses from other manufacturers.

Italy uses between 10 million and 12 million doses of flu vaccines every year, according to the ministry.

LinkedIn: Google, BBC, and Unilever are UK's most sought after employers

googleGoogle, the BBC and Unilever are the most sought after employers in the UK, according to LinkedIn?s new employer rankings.

The rankings, based on the billions of interactions among LinkedIn?s members, were announced today at LinkedIn?s Talent Connect event in central London, in front of more than 500 of Europe?s top employers.

Other organisations comprising the top ten InDemand employers include: Shell, BP, Microsoft, Apple, John Lewis, Burberry and HP.

LinkedIn also investigated what makes a desirable and sought-after employer in the UK. The results suggest that UK professionals are more interested in working for technology, media and retail brands ? all of which combined to dominate the top ten. Four of the UK top ten employer brands were comprised of tech giants, including Google, Microsoft, Apple and HP.

Despite the importance of the financial services industry to the UK economy, just two companies from the sector ? Goldman Sachs and Barclays ? made it into the UK top 20. Nine of the top ten most InDemand employer brands possess over 10,000 employees - only Burberry bucked the trend.

Globally, companies believe that their website (78%) and word of mouth (56%) are the most effective ways of promoting employer brand. Nearly half (46%) are already finding social professional networks highly effective for employer branding - 47% for the UK.

David Cohen, Director of LinkedIn Talent Solutions, Northern Europe, comments: ?Despite tough economic times, companies are increasingly competing for top talent, with 70% of employers ranking employer branding as one of their biggest priorities.

?The ability to better understand how your company is perceived amongst key professional audiences empowers you to take steps to better engage the professionals you most want to hire.?

Over 60 Barnes & Noble locations victims of PIN pad tampering, customer data at risk

Book retailer Barnes & Noble this morning revealed that 63 of its stores have been victims of PIN pad tampering, following an internal investigation of "every PIN pad in every store" (just under 700 locations). B&N calls the tampering, "a sophisticated criminal effort to steal credit card information, debit card information, and debit card PIN numbers," and warns customers who may have swiped their cards at affected locations to alter debit card PINs as a precaution, as well as to keep an eye on credit card statements for false charges.

B&N specifically note that its company database hasn't been breached, and purchases made through the B&N website, its Nook e-reader, and the Nook mobile apps are unaffected. According to the company, the PIN pads were implanted with "bugs" that allowed the recording of credit card numbers and PINs. To be extra safe, B&N disconnected all of its PIN pads on September 14 and is only allowing credit card purchases directly through cash registers. For a full list of affected stores, head past the break.

Surface RT review: Microsoft tablet mixed blessing

??Surface RT, Microsoft's first foray into personal computing, is a hardware success, and the company should be proud. Windows RT, the operating system that runs on it, is less of a reason for self-back-patting, however.

The Great ?Smart Meters? Hoax. Electromagnetic Fields Are Real ...

Just when you thought modern technology in the wrong hands of profit driven companies can?t possibly destroy your health, soil, air, food and water any worse than it already does?something even more monstrous is cooking in their ?money making oven?!

This time it is called?SMART METER!

The only ?smart? thing about it is that the utility providers found a dirty way to measure (and in the future control) your use of gas, electricity and water, by ensuring bigger profits, more control and power for them and a high cost for you.

The reality is that this action caused a?large number of people reporting health effects, privacy violations, safety and security dangers, environmental damage and much bigger bills.

Utilities across the country are installing the so-called wireless ?smart? meters. Take a look at the shocking short video below to quickly grasp the whole picture:

?

How Does The Smart Meter Technology Work?

These meters operate in a wireless mesh network with your neighbors? Smart Meters and transmit intense bursts of non-ionising, microwave radiation, 24 hrs/ day. ?This radiation (also known as RF EMF) is the same kind emitted by mobile phone masts. More than 5,000 studies show RF EMF radiation is harmful to humans, plants and animals.

Smart Meters can expose the body to 160 to 800x times as much microwave radiation as mobile phones.?Smart Meters can emit intense pulses of radiation more than 14,000 times each day!?(as stated by Senior Nuclear Policy Lecturer at UCSC, Daniel Hirsch).

?

How Do Smart Meters Affect Your Health?

Thousands of people have complained of?tinnitus, headaches, nausea, sleeplessness, allergies, heart arrhythmia, and other symptoms after a ?smart? meter was installed. ?An increasing number of people?are developing??electro-sensitivity?.? There are also reports of ?smart? meter interference with pacemakers and other implants.

European surveys have shown at least 1 in 20 people are moderately or severely sensitive to RF EMF radiation, experiencing one or more of the symptoms above. ?Human, animal and cell culture studies indicate long term systemic health effects from radiation, including?hormone disruption, DNA damage, leakage of blood-brain barrier, sperm count reduction and damage, sleep disorders, learning difficulties, ADHD, dementia and cancer. There is concern that pregnant women and children are particularly vulnerable.

In this eye opening video by renowned?dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, you can actually see how low level pulsed microwave radiation causes insects to ?jump? off the leaves!?Imagine what this can do to your own cells, every hour of the day and night! This is a must watch video to fully understand the implications such technologies have, how they can affect your health if you don?t remove yourself from the source and what the safe alternatives are.

?

What Can You Do To Avoid Smart Meters?

Smart Meters are voluntary!?YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SMART METERS.??Although you might encounter some opposition from your utility provider, remember they can not breach your withdrawal of consent. Get educated and active, inform other people in your neighborhood and create a smart meter-free environment. ?Write letters to your utility provider and ask for removal of your smart meter. ?You can find more useful tips and information by checking out the websites under ?resources? below.

Remember, if you can?t actually feel it, see it or smell it, it doesn?t mean it doesn?t exist and so it can?t possibly affect your health. ?Radiation is real!
